Chairman's Address (Done by Vice Chairman Latham) 01-02-2011
Dear all
Happy New Year.
Please read the following report on a robbery in Currie Road in broad daylight last Saturday.
The no.1 deterrent is a street guard. The CPF recommends groups of 20 residences (10 on either side of the road) signing 3 year debit order authorities, payable into a "trust" account (2 signatures). The money can be used to pay for a guard. Guards from security company's cost around R15,000 per month for 24 hours. It might be better to employ two guards directly (R6000 should do it) and let them use an old cell phone to alert Street Captains and Security Companies.
Or, it's my thought that, residents should all inform their security companies that they will not be renewing their contracts and, rather, go onto a month to month billing with them. This empowers a street to get a "group quotation" which could well include a guard for not very much more that they are currently paying.
The no.2 deterrent is cameras. The CPF recommends a combination of dummy and real cameras. At least put in dummies immediately and the real one's later. Dummies cost around R120 each and look very real. The cameras should focus on driveway gates, pedestrian gates, and down the road in both directions and be clearly visible to robbers perusing the area for targets. If you want to know where to get cameras, email me back and I can advise. If you are driving along and see well dressed men loading a TV into a vehicle in broad daylight, it most likely is a robbery. Immediately call ADT,Chubb, Blue and 10111 (even if it might be a false alarm).

Subject: robbery 399 Currie Road
Hi Alain
I would like to report of a robbery on the 29 January 2011 at 399 Currie Road.
The robbery occurred in broad daylight at quarter to three on Saturday afternoon.
I was driving past my house and I noticed a small silver car parked on the pavement outside my house and the front steel entrance door was open. I then saw two well dressed black gentleman coming out the front entrance. The one had dark sunglasses he was slender and average height he was wearing a white collared shirt and dark blue jeans. The other guy was short and plump he was wearing a brown collared shirt and dark blue jeans.
The short guy was carrying the plasma tv screen to the car. I reversed my car and started hooting at them , the guy wearing the white collared shirt came to the car window on passenger side and wanted to speak to me and requested that I roll down the window . I refused and he asked me how could he help me and I told he was in my house and he must get out!! He then started tapping on the back window at which point I drove off and alerted the security in Nonoti and I called the flying squad . By this point they suspects had already left the property.
They managed to break the lock on the front entrance steel door . This is not easy door to open so they must have been a while trying to get into the property. We have three dogs which did not deter them , I suspect they might have drugged them as they were docile when I arrived which I found quite strange. As I was in a state of shock I cannot remember all the details but I know they were driving a small silver car it could have been a Getz or a Huyindai.
I only saw two men not sure if there were more in the house but I want to stress they are well dressed and well spoken. Driving past my house initially I thought we had new neighbours and then I realized that they coming out my house. A passerby would have not suspected a thing.
I think it is important that we know who our neighbors are in order to identify any unusual activity. I would like to thank enforce security and SOS security for their quick response . It could have ended badly but luckily we were not at home at the time, they stole 3 plasma tv’s, a dvd player, a cd player and sound system. I am not sure it they were armed or not .
Opposite our property is a demolished house with a Tyson board. This property has attracted a lot of vagrants and criminal activity in the area especially on Lawrence Road. I have noticed an increased level of activity especially in the evenings on Lawrence road, there are always cars stopped on side of the road.
We hired a security guard for the weekend and he confirmed that there is a lot of activity on Currie Road by Lawrence road and said that there could be prostitutes and drug dealers using this as a meeting point.
I spoke to Tyson properties and they indicated that developer will probably commence building In March this year . We have been in the house for over three years and have never had a break in till now .
The other entrance to our house is on Nonoti avenue we have a day and night guard from SOS security , This had proved to be a successful, we pay R600 per house per month I think a similar set up on Currie Road would be successful .
Many thanks
